In 2006, the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity created the American Leadership Council for Diversity in Healthcare to foster collaboration among professional diversity practitioners committed to developing and implementing change initiatives through research, education, and advocacy to improve the quality, safety, and access to care among the nation’s health care providers. The Council, consisting of diversity practitioners from Institute member hospitals across the country, functions as an advisory group that provides insight and perspective to the Institute and the field of health care diversity and inclusion management through enhancing national efforts aimed at fostering inclusion, changing mindsets, increasing cultural competence and adavancing health equity.

In a pioneering effort, the Council developed the Certificate in Diversity Management Fellowship, the only comprehensive diversity certificate fellowship focused solely on health care. Setting practice standards in health care diversity management and establishing diversity management as a professional discipline, this fellowship provides the diversity practitioner with a practical learning experience in all aspects of designing, implementing, and measuring the effectiveness of a diversity initiative.
