December 2019: AHA Equity of Care Webinar Series featuring Atrium Health
The Institute for Diversity and Health Equity second webinar in the Equity of Care webinar series that provided demonstrated examples from hospitals and health systems on their efforts to reduce health care disparities and promote diversity and inclusion within their organizations. Kinneil Coltman, vice president and chief diversity officer, and Alisahah Cole, M.D., chief community impact officer, presented on behalf of Atrium Health, and shared their journey to hardwire health equity best practices throughout the organization while impacting social determinants of health in the community to support Atrium Health's mission to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing - for all.

In this webinar, part of the Equity of Care Webinar Series, IFDHE in collaboration with the AHA is pleased to feature the Carolyn Boone Lewis Equity of Care winner and honorees. Equitable care ensures that all patients receive the highest quality of care, care that is individualized to the needs of every person that needs it and the community being served by a hospital or health system. The Equity of Care Award honors noteworthy leaders who have demonstrated a high level of success in reducing health care disparities and the promotion of diversity and inclusion within their organization.
This enhanced training presented by Tanenbaum will dig deep into specific, timely topics like conscience objections and unconscious bias. It will also give participants more opportunities to apply and practice new tools and skills to tackle complex circumstances of religion as a component of patient-centered care.
On this webinar, which was part of the IFDHE's Diversity Dialogue series, Kristin Preihs, senior program manager at the AHA, discussed how Hospital Improvement Innovation Networks (HIIN) can utilize the Health Equity Organizational Assessment (HEOA) tool to address and eliminate health and health care disparities that continue to exist for far too many diverse individuals. Participants were taught how to use a self-reporting methodology to collect demographic data from patients and caregivers, and how to analyze and verify the data to communicate outcomes for various patient populations.
Part of the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity’s Diversity Dialogue series, in this webinar Joseph A. Greco M.D. and Joanne B. Glusman, MSW, LSW of Main Line Health discussed how to ensure that all in the community, especially those most vulnerable, can access highly competent and welcoming medical care. Participants were made aware of the disparities the LGBTQ community faces, and how Main Line Health’s LGBTQ Inclusive Care program addressed these issues through training and partnerships, improving access to equitable care for all.
March 28, 2019: Cone Health Using Data to Improve Care
Part of the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity’s Diversity Dialogue series, in this webinar Laura Vail, director, Office of Inclusion and Health Equity, Cone Health, Greensboro, N.C. discussed how Equity of Care Award Honoree Cone Health utilizes data to improve care, reduce disparities, and provide quality access to care in their community. Vail highlighted the importance of competency training and diversity in leadership and community partnerships, and how raising awareness can lead to change utilizing REaL data and qualitative and quantitative techniques.
February 26, 2019: A System's Approach to Enhance Patient Experience and Reduce Disparities
Part of the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity’s Diversity Dialogue series, Pamela Y. Abner, MPA, CPXP, vice president and chief administrative officer of diversity and inclusion for the Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS), discussed how MSHS is working to collect race/ethnicity and Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) data to enhance the patient experience. Participants learned about the multi-pronged MSHS approach: addressing IT systems, providing staff education and reviewing of health outcomes to address and reduce disparities in health care.
As part of the Institute’s Equity of Care webinar series, Sandra Ogunremi, DHA, CDM, senior diversity, equity and inclusion consultant with Regional Health, Rapid City, S.D., shared insights on how Regional Health achieved positive outcomes in its health equity journey. Participants gained practical knowledge on how cultural awareness can be used to improve patient experiences and foster cross cultural communication. Attendees learned how to make health equity actionable system-wide. The #123forEquity pledge was used as a roadmap by leveraging leadership, resources, teams and partnerships.
November 2018: Religious Diversity in Health Care
During the November 27, 2018 webinar, Kathleen A. Curran , senior director of public policy at Catholic Health Associations of the United States, and Maria McQuade, health care program associate at the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, discussed the impact religious practices and faith based medicine may have on a patient's decision to receive healthcare. The increasing cultural and religious diversity within the health care workforce has led to a unique set of challenges that managers may not be prepared to respond to and proactively address in areas such as attire, prayer, scheduling, and consciousness. Curran and McQuade presented recommendations for health care leaders and diversity professionals to improve the health care experience of religiously diverse patients and employees.
September 2018: Resiliency, Aging and the Personal Determinants of Health
During the September 27, 2018 webinar, AARP's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Charlotte Yeh, challenged participants about their assumptions based solely on someone's age. As better health outcomes and longevity have increased in the population, participants gained a new view of aging: not as a period of decline, but as a vibrant continuation of vitality, insight and contribution. Attendees learned about the science of resiliency as well as how ability, attitudes, and meaningful relationships are essential components to bringing positivity to life and aging. Dr. Yeh provided a new forward-thinking model to health care providers on how they could better meet and address the unique and exciting challenges of people's personal determinants of health, and bring satisfaction across all dimensions of life. This webinar discusses the development and implementation of a Language Services Documentation Tool at Cambridge Health Alliance, co-hosted by Disparities Solutions Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. Patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) face language barriers that can have adverse effects on safety and quality of care. Language data collection is necessary to identify language needs, provide a professional medical interpreter and analyze health equity.
Initiated in 2015 under the leadership of Chief Medical Officer Tom Kayrouz, M.D., and Robert Pierce, director of quality and process improvement, the Daily Safety Huddle Call is one tactical element of AnMed Health's efforts to function as a high-reliability organization. Principles of culturally and linguistically appropriate care delivery are embedded in AnMed Health's work, including safety and risk mitigation relative to cultural competence and patient-provider communication. This webinar also contains discussion of the correlation between Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services, Joint Commission Standards and principles of high reliability as well as the details of the AnMed Health Safety Huddle.
